KOKURA DENIM

The technique of KOKURA-ORI, the roots of "KOKURA DENIM", was born in the early 1600s. The durability of the fibers was said to be so strong that not even arrows could tear through. For this reason, it was commonly used to make Hakama pants for the Samurai class. These Hakama pants were so high in quality that they were even prized by the famous general who founded the Tokugawa Shogunate, Ieyasu Tokugawa.

In the latter half of the 1800s, along with the modernization of Japan, the KOKURA-ORI technique of Hakama pants-making was passed down to produce men's school uniforms, and they were produced in their own unique “Pepper & Salt” color pattern.  However, it became extinct in the early 20th century. A textile designer named Noriko Tsuiki has recreated KOKURA-ORI. The KOKURA-ORI became known as an extremely strong fabric throughout the country, and it is said to be the roots of Japanese denim.

Thus “KOKURA DENIM”, the world's first denim fabric developed with a unique “Pepper & Salt” color pattern which can only be reproduced using the KOKURA-ORI technique, was born. This durable denim fabric born from the technology and ideas unique to KOKURA-ORI is gray in color, and it is woven with a “MOKUITO” style, which twists two colors of yarn together. The fabric features a deep color expression that cannot be obtained with mono-colored yarn. It has strength and suppleness, breaks in and fits to the body better with more usage, and becomes smoother in texture as it ages, similar to how leather products age.
